Vinson & Elkins Named Among Law360’s 2022 Texas Powerhouses

Vinson & Elkins has been named a Texas Powerhouse by Law360 in recognition of the firm’s successes during the past year.

On the litigation side, Law360 notes Vinson & Elkins’ role in securing a $94 million jury verdict for client Huntsman Corp. in connection with an action alleging its industrial gas supplier, Praxair Inc., failed to deliver agreed-upon volumes of carbon monoxide and hydrogen.

In an interview with Law360, Vinson & Elkins’ Vice Chair Michael Holmes said, “our strategy is just to handle high-profile litigation matters. We want to be a destination litigation practice, and we want people to seek us out by reputation. When you’re focused on high-profile trial work, you’re going to see work in a variety of different industries.”

Law360 also highlights Vinson & Elkins’ involvement in some of the year’s largest energy transactions, including Woodside Petroleum’s roughly $43 billion merger with BHP Group; the business combination between Independence Energy, LLC and Contango Oil & Gas Company; and the firm’s representation of Dallas-based payment company MoneyGram International, Inc. in its $1.8 billion acquisition by Madison Dearborn Partners.

“V&E has done a good job of keeping its eye on the ball, really focusing on maintaining a great clientele, a great roster of work, and being fair in its compensation system,” said Sarah Morgan, co-head of the firm’s Mergers & Acquisitions and Capital Markets practice group. “It’s really all those things that have allowed us to maintain our dominance when there is undoubtedly a huge competitive threat. There’s a lot of people trying to enter the Texas market.”

This is the sixth time Law360 has selected Regional Powerhouses, and Vinson & Elkins has been named to the Texas list each time (previously in 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2021).
