Vinson & Elkins Named Among Law360’s 2023 Texas Powerhouses

Vinson & Elkins LLP has a strong Texas presence, which allowed it to successfully represent Woodside Petroleum Ltd. in its massive $43 billion merger with BHP Petroleum, and secure $280 million in damages on behalf of Antero Treatment LLC in the past year.

And despite the firm’s increasingly national strategy and focus, Houston-based Keith Fullenweider, who joined V&E straight out of law school and is now chair of the firm and a member of its management committee, told Law360 that Texas and its Texas clients and lawyers are very much part of its foundation. Those legal wins and strong roots in the state have earned it a spot as one of Law360’s 2023 Regional Powerhouses.

“Even though we might focus on growing in places like Washington or New York or San Francisco or London, Texas will always be a huge part of V&E and obviously continues to be that today,” Fullenweider said.

A good representation of the firm’s complementary national and Texas focus can be seen through its recent trial litigation, said Christopher V. Popov, who has been with V&E for the entirety of his legal career and is co-head of the firm’s complex commercial litigation practice.

Over the past year, V&E litigators in Texas have attained a number of key litigation victories, including a September 2022 decision by the Fifth Circuit upholding the dismissal of all claims brought by two major oil and gas companies against the Sabine Neches Navigation District concerning its funding mechanism for major infrastructure projects and upgrades. Notably, the V&E team behind the case obtained Fifth Circuit confirmation just one year after the litigation began, the firm said.
