Michael A. Garza

Michael is an associate in the Restructuring and Reorganization practice group and is based in the Firm’s New York office. His practice focuses primarily on bankruptcy and financial restructuring matters, including representations of debtors, creditors, investors, and other interested parties in chapter 11 bankruptcies, out-of-court restructurings, and acquisitions. Prior to joining the Firm, Michael clerked for the Honorable Brendan L. Shannon of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware.

Experience Highlights

  • Lilis Energy, Inc. and certain of its affiliates in connection with their chapter 11 bankruptcy cases pursuant to a Restructuring Support Agreement with certain key stakeholders, including Värde Funds and its RBL Lenders

  • CARBO Ceramics Inc. and certain of its affiliates, who were engaged in the manufacturing of ceramic proppant and other industrial ceramic materials and oilfield products, in their chapter 11 bankruptcy cases filed in Houston, Texas; pre-negotiated chapter 11 plan confirmed within 80 days of case filing

  • Riverstone Holdings and HPS Investment Partners as equity owners in connection with the restructuring of Alta Mesa Resources and its subsidiaries involving approximately $862 million of funded debt

  • Angelo Gordon as administrative agent for a prepetition secured credit facility and a debtor-in-possession credit facility, and stalking horse bidder and purchaser of certain upstream oil and gas assets in the chapter 11 bankruptcy case of Weatherly, Oil & Gas, LLC

  • Metalmark Capital in its capacity as an equity owner and counterparty to a tax receivable agreement in connection with Jones Energy’s restructuring and chapter 11 cases

  • Cloud Peak Energy and its affiliates, the only pure-play Powder River Basin coal company and the third largest coal company in the United States, in the sale of substantially all their operating assets to Navajo Transitional Energy Company, LLC, a wholly owned, subsidiary of the Navajo Nation, as part of its chapter 11 bankruptcy involving approximately $350 million in funded debt and over $750 million in total liabilities

  • Sixth Street Partners in connection with a special situation investment

  • Ad hoc group of holders of, and the indenture trustee for, legacy bonds in the iHeartCommunications, Inc. chapter 11 cases

  • First-lien lender and purchaser in the La Paloma Generating Company, LLC chapter 11 cases

  • Agent and lender under a senior secured term loan facility in the Toisa Limited chapter 11 cases

  • Official committee of unsecured creditors and post-confirmation settlement trust in the Samson Resources Corporation chapter 11 cases
