Laurel is a commercial litigator whose practice focuses on complex business disputes in both state and federal courts, including breach of contract, intellectual property, securities litigation, and bankruptcy litigation. She also has experience representing clients in foreign and domestic arbitrations and internal and government investigations.
Additionally, Laurel devotes time to pro bono work, serves as Executive Vice President, Secretary & Treasurer of The New York American Inn of Court and as Treasurer of the Columbia Law School Association, co-authors the chapter on “The Complaint” in West’s New York Practice Series Commercial Litigation in New York State Courts, and is recognized as a “Rising Star” by New York Metro Super Lawyers.
Litigation & Arbitration
(S.D.N.Y.) – Representing oil and gas company in connection with a class action lawsuit
(S.D.N.Y.) – Represented publicly traded company in connection with a securities class action; helped to guide the client to a favorable confidential settlement
(International Chamber of Commerce [ICC]) — Represented an international oil and gas company as the claimant in a breach of contract case involving oil and gas interests in Argentina; helped to guide the client to a favorable confidential settlement
Represented a major pharmaceutical company in a series of international arbitrations in London for indemnification under bespoke insurance policies responding to the risk of patent infringement damages in connection with the manufacture and distribution of generic drugs
Representing corporation in SEC investigation arising out of alleged violations of the federal securities laws
Represented public company in internal investigation into allegedly improper revenue recognition procedures
Represented private equity firm in an internal investigation into the company’s compliance with local permitting requirements
Represented Audit Committee of a public multinational technology company involved in an ongoing government investigation into the company’s compliance with the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act
Represented financial institutions as well as its officers and directors in response to inquiries by the Securities and Exchange Commission, New York Stock Exchange and Financial Industry Regulatory Authority
(Bankr. S.D.N.Y.) – Obtained summary judgment from the bench on behalf of a Trust in an adversary proceeding seeking that a debt be declared non-dischargeable due to defalcation or fraud, embezzlement, and willful and malicious injury; argued appeal in which the court affirmed the decision from the bench
(2nd Cir.); (S.D.N.Y.) – Served as second chair in a week-long jury trial representing the author of the play Point Break LIVE! in a breach of contract and copyright infringement lawsuit that resulted in a verdict and $250,000 (net) damages award for the client; obtained affirmance of such decision by the Second Circuit on appeal
Successfully obtained insurance coverage for an individual whose home was demolished as a result of Hurricane Sandy
