Howard Lithaw Lim

Howard Lithaw Lim is an IP attorney in the Dallas office of Vinson & Elkins LLP where his practice focuses on patent litigation, patent preparation and prosecution and other technology matters. Howard has technical experience in the area of lithium-ion batteries, electric vehicles, semiconductors, semiconductor manufacturing equipment, and LCD and OLED display technologies.

Howard holds a J.D. and M.S. Electrical Engineering from Southern Methodist University. While in law school, he served as a judicial intern for the Honorable Barbara M.G. Lynn of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas.

Prior to practicing law, Howard had a substantial career in the lithium-ion battery industry working for Panasonic & Sanyo Electric Company developing new products in the areas of electric vehicle and energy storage technologies. He has represented clients in the lithium-ion battery, electric vehicle, semiconductor, software, telecommunications, industrial, automotive, and oil and gas sectors. Howard is fluent in Mandarin and Japanese.

  • (E.D. Tex.) – Represented a LCD manufacturer in the defense of a patent infringement action related to LCD modules

  • (N.D. Cal.) – Represented a semiconductor lithography equipment manufacturer and a semiconductor optics manufacturer in a 28 U.S.C. § 1782 action in relation to underlying patent litigation in Japan, Germany, and the Netherlands

  • (Pre-suit) – Represented a lithium-ion separator manufacturer in the defense of a potential patent infringement matter 

  • (E.D. Tex.), (E.D. Mo.) – Represented a leading Chinese motor manufacturer in the defense of a patent infringement action brought by a competitor relating to motors used in HVAC systems

  • (E.D. Tex.), (N.D. Cal.) –  Represented two VoIP software companies in the defense of a patent infringement action relating to caller ID generation and substitution

  • (E.D. Tex.) – Represented an optical communications company in the defense of a patent infringement action relating to coding schemes for signal transmission in optical communications networks

  • (PTAB) – Represented a leading Chinese manufacturer of motors in two inter partes review (IPR) matters challenging patents relating to motors used in HVAC systems

  • (E.D. Tex.) – Represented a Chinese LED lighting distributor in the defense of a potential patent infringement action relating to LED lighting strings

  • (E.D. Tex.) – Represented an oil and gas company in a patent infringement action relating to subterranean shale oil and gas drilling technology 

  • (C.D. Cal.) – Represented an industrial parts manufacturer in a patent infringement action related to industrial casters 

  • (U.S.P.T.O.) – Represented a software company in patenting technology relating to simulating virtual environments for the Internet of Things (IoT)

  • (U.S.P.T.O.) – Representing a software company in patenting technology relating to updating Bluetooth low power devices for the Internet of Things (IoT)

  • (U.S.P.T.O.) – Representing a software company in patenting technology relating to ZigBee and Z-wave open standards for the Internet of Things (IoT)

  • (U.S.P.T.O.) – Represented a semiconductor start-up company in patenting technology relating to electro-absorption modulators and lasers

  • (U.S.P.T.O.) – Representing a device manufacturer in patenting technology related to digital switches optimized for the Internet of Things (IoT)

  • (U.S.P.T.O.) – Prosecuted more than 14 U.S. patent applications for a major Japanese construction machinery manufacturer

  • (U.S.P.T.O.) – Prosecuted more than 12 U.S. patent applications for a major Japanese automotive hardware and electronics manufacturer

  • (U.S.P.T.O.) – Prosecuted more than 9 U.S. patent applications for a major Japanese electronic components manufacturer

  • Helmerich & Payne, Inc. in intellectual property matters related to its agreement to acquire MOTIVE Drilling Technologies, Inc., a drilling software company, for $75 million payable at closing and up to an additional $25 million in potential earnout payments

  • Represented a Hong Kong listed multinational corporation in its acquisition of a U.S. biotech company

  • Represented a Chinese motor manufacturer in its acquisition of a division of a multinational industrial motor company
