Appellate Lawyer Joshua Johnson Returns to Vinson & Elkins

Johnson is an accomplished litigator who has served in senior roles in government and private practice, handling appeals in civil and criminal matters.

Vinson & Elkins today announced that Joshua Johnson has returned to the firm as a Washington, D.C.-based counsel in the firm’s Appellate practice.

Johnson has more than a decade of appellate experience, including arguing cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and various U.S. Courts of Appeals. He has advised clients on a wide range of criminal and civil issues, with a particular focus on administrative, constitutional, and consumer financial laws.

“Joshua is an established leader in the appellate bar who has tackled and won numerous complex legal challenges of first impression across the country,” said Vinson & Elkins Partner Jeremy Marwell, chair of the firm’s Appellate practice. “He is also a wonderful colleague who will be an invaluable asset to our Appellate team and clients.”

Johnson most recently served as Assistant General Counsel at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, where he advised Bureau leadership on issues of administrative law and federal consumer financial law, with a particular focus on legal issues related to credit reporting and consumer privacy.

He returns to Vinson & Elkins’ Appellate practice, where he previously focused on a wide range of civil and criminal matters in the U.S. Supreme Court and federal and state appellate courts, as well as matters in federal trial courts and regulatory and legal counseling. Before joining the firm, Johnson served in the Appellate Section of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Criminal Division, where he participated in briefing cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and argued cases before the U.S. Courts of Appeals.

“I chose to return to Vinson & Elkins’ Appellate practice because it combines the agility and savvy of an appellate boutique with big-firm resources and a deep bench of trial and appellate talent,” Johnson said.

His distinguished legal career began with a series of prestigious judicial clerkships at all three levels of the federal court system, including the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, and the federal district court in Massachusetts. Johnson also served as an instructor for the University of Virginia School of Law’s Supreme Court Litigation Clinic.

He earned both his Bachelor of Arts in Ethics, Politics, and Economics, summa cum laude, and Juris Doctor degrees from Yale University. During his time in law school, he was a senior editor of The Yale Law Journal.

Vinson & Elkins’ Appellate lawyers have an enviable track record of success in high-stakes litigation across a broad range of subject matters and industries, with particular experience in commercial litigation, administrative and constitutional law, energy issues, and other litigation in federal district and appellate courts nationwide, and in the U.S. Supreme Court. The Appellate team includes former law clerks for the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Courts of Appeals, and the Supreme Court of Texas, as well as various federal district courts and state courts of appeals.
