Law360 Names Kaam Sahely a 2022 Energy MVP

In a profile appearing in Law360, Sahely describes his biggest challenge the past year—his lead role in the representation of Woodside Petroleum in its $40B merger with BHP Petroleum. The merger created the largest energy company listed on the Australian Stock Exchange, one of the largest energy companies in the world and a company with a global top 10 position in the LNG industry by production.

“That was really just a lot of communicating externally, internally, working with lots of people, pushing people and trying to be collaborative,” Sahely told Law360. “And doing it for a long period of time was really a marathon to get that transaction, which I think is the biggest energy deal of the year, from where we started to where it closed.”

Among other notable matters highlighted by Law360, Sahely was most proud of his representation of Goldman Sachs Renewable Power (now MN8 Energy) in their establishment of a financing partnership with California-based electric vehicle infrastructure company ChargePoint to reduce the upfront costs of vehicle charging technology.

When asked what led him to become an energy attorney, Sahely notes he was attracted to the industry due to how integral it is to the economy, and said that he advises junior attorneys to focus on the meaningful nature of their work as the world pushes further toward decarbonization and clean energy projects.
