Biography
Over the last 20 years John has built a practice concentrating primarily on the federal income tax aspects of domestic and international transactions. This work includes advising clients on the formation of business ventures; mergers and acquisitions; capital restructurings; spin-offs; and asset and stock dispositions.
John has substantial experience representing energy clients in a broad range of transactions and tax planning matters. In addition, John represents numerous private equity funds in connection with capital formation and transaction planning. His practice also includes advising master limited partnerships (MLPs) on capital formation and acquisition activities. His extensive experience in tax law has earned John recognition by The Best Lawyers in America® as one of its leading lawyers in 2003 and 2006 - 2011; and by Texas Monthly as a "Super Lawyer" in 2005 and 2006.

- Represented Energy Transfer Partners, L.P. in connection with the sale of propane operations, Heritage Operating, L.P. and Titan Energy Partners, L.P., to AmeriGas Partners, L.P for $2.9 billion
- Represented TPG Capital, LP in connection with the US$979 million cash acquisition of Ashland Distribution, which distributes chemicals, plastics, and composite materials in North America, Europe
- Representing Houston-based Continental Airlines in its agreed merger with UAL Corp's United Airlines, in a deal estimated to be worth more than $3 billion
