Vinson & Elkins has had an active role in India for more than 20 years, representing clients in a broad range of projects and disputes throughout the country. We have represented some of the world’s largest companies on investments in India, as well as a significant number of the largest Indian companies on a variety of matters, both transactional and contentious in nature.

We maintain an active India practice, staffing matters primarily out of our Hong Kong and London offices to provide our clients maximum coverage across multiple time zones. The team has worked with most of the top law firms in India, and our lawyers have years of experience overseeing Indian counsel to help ensure that our clients’ standards are met.

Our International Dispute Resolution team has been instrumental in advising one of India’s largest private-sector companies for more than 15 years on matters inside and outside India.

  • Reliance Industries on its US$7.2 billion sale of 30 per cent stake in 23 oil and gas production sharing contracts to BP and formation of 50:50 joint venture for the sourcing and marketing of gas in India
  • Consortium of international and domestic companies on a series of long-running disputes against the Government of India concerning the profit sharing from an oil and gas production field valued at US$1 billion+, including three UNCITRAL arbitrations and at least five cases before the Indian courts
  • Asian multinational energy and infrastructure conglomerate on an arbitration in London under the ICC Rules. The dispute related to contractual claims over the supply and refurbishment of a blow-out preventer stack to be used in drilling activities offshore India
  • Indian oil and gas company on a series of disputes against the Government of India concerning the development of a gas field, including advice in relation to a number of cost recovery and gas pricing issues
