A team of lawyers from Vinson & Elkins, Lambda Legal and Immigration Equality helped secure the release on April 30, 2020 of two asylum seekers living with HIV who were detained at an ICE detention facility in eastern Texas with at least one confirmed case of COVID-19, less than a week after submitting a letter demanding their release.

The men were severely persecuted in Cuba because of their political activism and sexual orientation and had been detained in the U.S. since October 2019. A copy of the complete press release can be read at the link below under “Resources.”

The V&E team working on the case included Tom Leatherbury, Kent Piacenti, Lindsey Pryor, Jeremy Gonzalez, Seth Yost and Alex Noll.
