Tom Leatherbury Receives 2021 Tony Mauro Media Lawyer Award
The American Lawyer has honored Vinson & Elkins partner Tom Leatherbury with the 2021 Tony Mauro Media Lawyer Award for zealous advocacy for the freedom of the press.
The award was created to mark Tony Mauro’s retirement after almost 40 years of covering the U.S. Supreme Court.
Leatherbury co-leads Vinson & Elkins’ firmwide Appellate practice group and also serves as Director of the First Amendment Clinic at Southern Methodist University’s Dedman School of Law. A nationally-recognized First Amendment litigator with a career spanning more than four decades, Leatherbury regularly represents traditional and digital publishers, as well as broadcasters, in all aspects of media litigation, including libel, privacy, reporter’s privilege, newsgathering and access actions.
Among many other honors, Leatherbury was recently recognized by the State Bar of Texas with the Patrick Wiseman Award for Civil Rights and was appointed to the Texas Access to Justice Commission. Later this year, Leatherbury will also be presented with the Yale Medal, the highest honor presented by the Yale Alumni Association, for his devotion to Yale’s ideals and support through extensive, exemplary service to the university and its schools, institutes and programs.
The Tony Mauro Media Lawyer Award will be presented at The American Lawyer Industry Awards in New York City on December 2, 2021.
