Technology and Intellectual Property Attorney Rajesh Patel Joins Vinson & Elkins as Counsel

Vinson & Elkins continues to grow its Technology Transactions and Intellectual Property practice with the addition of counsel Rajesh Patel, a former engineer who focuses on issues regarding patents, trademarks and copyrights and on the ownership, use and protection of other technology-related assets. He will be based in the firm’s Houston office.

“The technology industry is constantly evolving, but our dedication to providing best-in-class legal service to our clients — from emerging companies to established leaders — is constant,” said Devika Kornbacher, head of Vinson & Elkins’ Technology Transactions team and the firm’s Cybersecurity & Data Privacy practice. “Rajesh has impressive experience, from his time as an engineer, in-house counsel and at a law firm, that will provide valuable perspective as clients face new opportunities and challenges amid rapid change.”

Most recently, Patel was a member of the Corporate, Finance and Investment practice at King & Spalding, where he garnered deep experience in drafting and negotiating inbound and outbound license agreements, patent preparation and prosecution, validity, infringement and freedom to operate opinions, and due diligence. He has also counseled clients related to a variety of intellectual property types, including data privacy and data protection matters, as well as on IP-related considerations in corporate transactions.

“V&E’s excellent reputation for advising companies in some of the fastest-growing sectors of the economy presents the perfect platform for me to continue to expand my practice,” said Patel. “The firm’s strength across myriad corporate and litigation practice areas which are vital to businesses exploring new or enhanced technologies provides great opportunity for me, and I am thrilled to join such a dynamic team.”

Patel earned his law degree from University of Houston Law Center and holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to his legal career, he worked as a Process Design Engineer for Fluor Corporation and Jacobs Engineering Group, where he designed chemical plants for a variety of notable clients.

A cross-section of the firm’s Intellectual Property and Corporate practices, including attorneys who devote their practices to technology and commercial transactions, Vinson & Elkins’ Technology Transactions team combines vast transactional experience with understanding of the critical legal and technical aspects of intellectual property rights. Vinson & Elkins’ Intellectual Property team combines technical knowledge and deep litigation experience in handling all types of IP cases in district courts across the country and before the Federal Circuit involving patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets and unfair competition, and trade dress.
