Law360 Names Steve Gill A 2017 MVP
Vinson & Elkins partner Steve Gill has been named one of Law360’s 2017 Energy MVPs of the Year for his work guiding clients through major mergers and acquisitions, including helping to establish one of the largest natural gas producers in the country.
In a profile appearing in Law360, Gill is recognized for advising Rice Energy on its $6.7 billion cash-and-stock acquisition by EQT Corp., boosting EQT’s footprint in the Marcellus and Utica shales. Despite some obstacles, including shareholder objections, “the transaction made tremendous sense,” Gill told Law360. “Fortunately, both sides of our deal team, both the Rice and EQT side, were able to effectively counter the activists’ argument and the deal passed overwhelmingly.”
Based in Houston, Gill has worked on energy deals since the start of his career. “It is exciting because energy, it is a very capital-intensive industry, so that brings with it obviously the need for capital, the need to sell and trade securities and the need to be efficient. So the efficiencies are what drive people towards the M&A side of it,” Gill said, adding that his practice extends to other sectors as well.
Law360’s MVP awards honor lawyers who have distinguished themselves from their peers over the past year through high-stakes litigation, record-breaking deals and complex global matters. Winners were selected by a committee of Law360 editors, who reviewed more than 1,000 nominations. Read Gill’s complete profile here.
This is the fifth consecutive year a V&E attorney has been named to Law360’s MVP list. V&E partners Michael Holmes, Keith Fullenweider and David Cohen were selected in 2016, 2015, 2014 and 2013, respectively.
