Law360 Names Doug McWilliams a 2019 Energy MVP
Vinson & Elkins partner Doug McWilliams has been named one of Law360’s 2019 Energy MVPs for his work on several multibillion-dollar oil and gas transactions over the past year.
In a profile appearing in Law360, McWilliams cites the $7.2 billion roll-up of Antero Resources Corp.’s midstream master limited partnership as his most challenging deal of the year. The deal, which closed in March 2019, also saw the MLP convert to a C-corporation and required sign-off from multiple stakeholders.
“It was basically about a six- or seven-way dance that took place over a 9- to 12-month period,” McWilliams told Law360. “It’s one of the more complex, longest-running transactions I’ve ever worked on.”
After earning his bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas and a law degree from Harvard, McWilliams returned to Texas to join V&E in 1995. He works with major energy clients across the world, focusing on taking privately held companies public, either through IPOs or combinations with public companies, and then advises them throughout their lifespans in various capital markets, shareholder activism and M&A transactions.
McWilliams describes the deal flow in the energy industry in Texas as one of his draws to the practice, but cautions younger attorneys against simply checking the box on a completed deal and moving on to the next one. “If you want to be successful in this practice, really dive into it and really take an interest in it and a love for it,” he said.
Law360’s MVP awards honor lawyers who have distinguished themselves from their peers by securing hard-earned successes in high-stakes litigation, complex global matters and record-breaking deals. Winners were selected by a committee of Law360 editors, who reviewed more than 900 nominations.
