2022 State Bar of Texas Annual Meeting
Vinson & Elkins is a sponsor of the State Bar of Texas’ 2022 Annual Meeting. On Friday, June 10, Senior Partner Tom Leatherbury will speak on “Litigation Against the State Bar: What It Was About and What It Means For The State Bar,” in which he will discuss McDonald v. Firth, a closely-watched case in which Vinson & Elkins defended the State Bar of Texas against a First Amendment mandatory bar challenge.
V&E obtained summary judgment in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas. On appeal, the U.S. Fifth Circuit vacated and granted partial summary judgment and a preliminary injunction to the three plaintiffs, but upheld the vast majority of the Bar’s challenged initiatives as constitutional. Ultimately, the U.S. Supreme Court denied opponents’ cert petition.
Tom will also participate on Friday on the panel “Courtroom Transparency — How the COVID–19 Pandemic Altered Court Accessibility and What Transparency Looks Like in a Post–COVID World.” This panel will cover sealing court records, lessons learned from remote and broadcast court proceedings, and what practitioners might expect as the Supreme Court Rules Advisory Committee studies and makes recommendations for rules changes about these issues.
