Douglas E. Hamel Of Counsel, Litigation

Doug joined the firm in 1976 and was admitted to partnership in 1983. He is an experienced trial lawyer with two distinct litigation practices. His condemnation practice focuses on representing clients whose property is being taken through the power of eminent domain. He also has significant experience counseling a broad range of clients in employment, labor, and civil rights law.

And he represents clients in matters involving issues of employment discrimination, pension benefits, and labor relations (including collective bargaining and unfair labor practices). He represents clients throughout the United States in federal and state courts, and before local authorities and agencies. 

Experience Highlights

  • (Tex. Dist.) – Represented an oil and gas refiner in the termination of an employee in a case involving alleged shareholder oppression
  • (Tex. Dist.) – Represented and international oilfield services company against another energy company alleging tortuous interference in a non-compete agreement. After trial it was found that the non-solicitation portions of plaintiff’s employment agreements were invalid
  • Represented a Virgin Island petroleum refining company in labor matters related to the closure of its refinery impacting approximately 2,000 employees and contract employees
  • (Va. Cir. – Prince William Cnty.) – Received a favorable judgment (one of the 10 largest in Virginia at the time) on behalf of a construction and engineering company in the taking of a property at 5% the total value of the property
  • (Va. Cir. – Prince William Cnty.) – Represented a former Washington Redskins player with the condemnation of land. This matter was successfully litigated and resulted in a favorable settlement

Labor & Employment

  • Represented a major life insurance company located in New York in connection with employment cases filed by former senior managers in Texas, Alaska, California, Florida, New York, North Carolina, and South Carolina
  • Represented a major oilfield services provider in obtaining reversal of an adverse determination in a Commissioner’s charge matter and dismissal of findings of discrimination in hiring and assignment for an affected class of more than 20,000 applicants and employees
  • Represented an international oil field service company in connection with an $85 million claim for pension benefits by the Internal Revenue Service on behalf of terminated employees
  • Represented a major oil company in the closure of unionized operations (including the successful defense of numerous union unfair labor practice charges)
  • Represented two major regional grocery chains in their labor relations activities, including collective bargaining, unfair labor practice charges, and the rejection of their collective bargaining agreements, as part of their emergence from bankruptcy
  • Represented a national steel manufacturing company in a class action lawsuit filed by former employees claiming pension benefits
  • (S.D. Tex) – Represented an international offshore drilling company in a Rehabilitation Act class case brought by the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs
  • Represented an international energy services company in a directed age investigation on the reduction of a workforce affecting 3,000 employees
  • Represented a major trucking company in a disability discrimination action brought by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on behalf of 50 employees

Condemnation & Eminent Domain

  • (Va. Cir. – Fairfax Cnty.) – Represented a land developer in a case involving the Silver Line Metro in D.C
  • Represented a regional holder of gas stations in several matters related to the taking of a property and the ability to operate a gas station
  • Represented a convenient store chain in a matter involving the taking of convenient stores
