Katy M. Gottsponer Partner, Project & Infrastructure Finance

Katy’s practice involves energy infrastructure project development and project finance transactions. She represents borrowers, lenders and investors in the development and financing of energy infrastructure projects with a focus on power, including renewable energy projects, and midstream natural gas projects.  Katy has particular experience advising sponsors in connection with international project financing transactions involving multilaterals and export credit agencies, including projects that provide a significant development impact in the region.

Experience Highlights

  • The issuer and project company, affiliates of Brookfield Renewable Partners L.P., owners of the 417 MW Safe Harbor hydroelectric generation facility located in Pennsylvania, in connection with a private placement of senior secured notes
  • The sponsors and borrowers, affiliates of The AES Corporation and Inversiones Bahía, in the project financing of the Colón LNG-to-power project, expected to be the largest combined-cycle power generation facility and first LNG import terminal to be built in Panama (Selected as Latin America Power Deal of the Year, Infrastructure Journal, 2016)
  • The issuer and project company, affiliates of Brookfield Renewable Partners L.P. and Emera, Inc., owners of the 610 MW Bear Swamp hydroelectric generation facility located in Massachusetts in connection with a private placement of senior secured notes
  • The borrower, Alto Maipo SpA, in the project financing of a 531 MW hydroelectric project in Chile – Project Finance International’s Latin America Power Deal of the Year. The senior lender group includes International Finance Corporation (IFC), Inter-American Investment Corporation (IIC), Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), Banco de Crédito e Inversiones S.A., Banco del Estado de Chile, Banco Itaú, Corpbanca, DNB Bank ASA and KfW Ipex-Bank GmbH
  • A tax equity investor in connection with investments in three utility-scale PV solar projects located in North Carolina
  • Transelec S.A. in the development and project financing of a 188 km electric transmission line that delivers energy to the Caserones copper mine in Chile

Project Development & Finance

  • The sponsors and borrower, an affiliate of AES Gener S.A. and Mitsubishi Corporation, in connection with the project financing of a 472 MW pulverized coal-fired generating facility in Chile.  Financing was provided by Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), Korea Trade Insurance Corporation (K-Sure), Nippon Export and Investment Insurance (NEXI), Banco del Estado de Chile, The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, HSBC Bank USA, Mizuho Corporate Bank and Korean Finance Corporation 
  • Energy services company in connection with a loan for the development of, and equity option in, a Butene-1 production facility in Texas 
  • A U.S. energy infrastructure fund in the negotiation of a development loan and equity investment transaction in connection with a refined products pipeline project located in New York and New Jersey
  • A sponsor in the restructuring of operations, maintenance, and asset management agreements for a portfolio of solar PV projects
  • Midstream Energy Partners in the development and financing of a depleted reservoir natural gas storage facility in northwestern Colorado by East Cheyenne Gas Storage LLC, a subsidiary of Merchant Energy Holdings
  • Clean Line Energy Partners in the development of a 200-mile, 345 kV transmission line to transmit renewable energy from wind and solar power generators in New Mexico
  • A developer in the potential acquisition and financing of a portfolio of PV solar projects in Honduras
  • A developer in the development and financing of a geothermal power generation project in Kenya, including the negotiation of the power purchase agreement
