V&E Awards Public Interest Summer Program Opportunities to Law Students
As part of Vinson & Elkins’ summer associate program, the firm awards public interest split opportunities each year to support law students who have a passion for public service. V&E sponsors summer associates who plan to work for public interest organizations located in any U.S. city where the firm has an office. V&E’s 2017 public interest recipients, Jacob Beach and Parker Cragg, are both second-year law students who were selected from a number of applications.
Each recipient will work for half the summer as a law clerk in V&E’s summer associate program, and the second half – up to six weeks – for a non-profit organization, while continuing to receive the full V&E weekly summer associate salary.
Cragg will re-join V&E as a summer associate in the Houston office and will also work for the ACLU of Texas. “I’m grateful beyond words for the opportunity to work at the ACLU of Texas,” said Cragg. “As a former HISD teacher and current joint degree student in law and education, I have a deep interest in the ACLU’s advocacy on behalf of students and public schools. I plan to return to Houston after I graduate, and look forward to serving my community in a variety of capacities throughout my legal career. My work with the ACLU will be an invaluable experience for me this summer and for years to come.”
Beach, who will join the Dallas office as a summer associate, will also work for the Catholic Charities Immigration Legal Services in Austin. "I am excited about the opportunity to help address one of the largest issues facing our society — access to the judicial system — by taking part in the V&E public interest program,” said Beach. “V&E has proven its dedication to public service, and I am honored to be able to give back to the Texas community thanks to the firm's support.”
Beach is a second-year student at the University of Texas School of Law. He received his B.A. in Political Science, summa cum laude, from Texas A&M University. He was an intern for the United States Department of Defense before attending law school.
Cragg is a second-year student at Stanford Law School. He received his B.A. in English from the University of Texas. He served as an English teacher for Teach for America and was the director of Three Oaks Academy before attending law school.
Previous V&E summer associates have worked with the following public interest and non-profit organizations:
- ABA Committee on Law and National Security
- ARC of Texas
- Catholic Charities
- The Environmental Defense Fund
- The Legal Aid Society of New York
- Lone Star Legal Aid
