Steve Gill and Jeremy Marwell Named 2018 Law360 MVPs
Vinson & Elkins partners Steve Gill and Jeremy Marwell
have been selected by Law360 as 2018 MVPs in the energy and
environmental categories, respectively.
This marks Gill’s second consecutive year as an energy MVP
and Marwell’s first year to be recognized as part of Law360’s MVP
series. Both attorneys were previously named Rising Stars by the publication.
Among only five attorneys named in the energy category, Gill
is lauded in a profile by Law360 for wielding “vast experience in the
energy space this year to keep intense competition at bay as lawyers from other
big-name firms swoop into Houston and try to grab market share.”
Gill’s recent notable transactions include advising RSP
Permian in its $9.5 billion sale to Concho Resources, creating the largest
unconventional shale producer in the Permian Basin, Energy Transfer Partners in
the $60 billion merger with Energy Transfer Equity in a unit-for-unit exchange
and Denbury Resources Inc. in its $1.7 billion agreement to acquire Penn
When asked by Law360 what motivates him, Gill cites
his desire to be remembered as one of the best M&A attorneys of his
generation. “It's that competitive drive, that's what fuels me,” he said.

As one of five attorneys named in the environmental
category, Marwell is commended for his role as lead appellate counsel for
several pipeline and industrial clients involved in high stakes disputes at the
U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.
Law360 highlighted several of those matters,
including a successful challenge to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s
solid waste recycling rule and Marwell’s defense of two major U.S. pipeline
projects while fending off an attack on the constitutionality of the Federal
Energy Regulatory Commission’s pipeline approval process.
“I’m very proud of the team
that we’ve built here at V&E, which combines, I think, great lawyers in
appellate, environmental and for these pipeline projects, the energy regulatory
field, all of which really just have to work seamlessly together throughout the
project development but also then the litigation phase,” Marwell told Law360.
