Harry Reasoner Named Justice Eugene A. Cook Professionalism Award Recipient

Published: 04-17-2019

Vinson & Elkins partner Harry Reasoner has been selected to receive the Houston Bar Association’s highest honor for professionalism, the Justice Eugene A. Cook Professionalism Award.

Established in 2018, the award is named for former Texas Supreme Court Justice Eugene A. Cook, who was the principal architect of the Texas Lawyer’s Creed. Recipients of the award must have demonstrated, “by conduct and character, a longstanding commitment to professionalism and a record of exemplary service in the areas of professionalism, legal ethics, and legal excellence,” according to the HBA. The award will be presented to Reasoner at the HBA’s Annual Dinner on May 16, 2019.

Reasoner, who has been a partner at V&E since 1970 and served as firmwide managing partner from 1992 through 2001, is a member of the firm’s complex commercial litigation group. Over the course of his five decade career, he has handled cases brought under the antitrust laws, RICO, securities law, and regulatory laws, involving master limited partnerships, communication networks, nuclear power plants, natural gas pipelines, energy and environmental regulations, oil and gas disputes, and mergers in a variety of industries.

During his term as managing partner, Reasoner spearheaded the firm’s effort to become one of the first major companies in Houston to offer benefits to employees’ same sex partners. A champion of pro bono legal services, Reasoner was also instrumental in creating and implementing many of V&E’s modern legal assistance programs. Reasoner is a member of the Board of The United States Supreme Court Historical Society, The Texas Supreme Court Historical Society, and The Baker Institute of Rice University. Since 2009, he has served as Chair of the Texas Access to Justice Commission, which is charged by the Texas Supreme Court with developing and facilitating pro bono legal aid to those who cannot afford it.
