David Tsai Awarded 2017 James C. Hormel Philanthropist Award by AIDS Legal Referral Panel

Published: 04-18-2017

Vinson & Elkins partner David Tsai has been selected to receive the 2017 James C. Hormel Philanthropist Award by the AIDS Legal Referral Panel (ALRP).

He will be recognized on May 3, 2017, at an event in connection with the ALRP’s Heartbeat Campaign to raise awareness and funds in support of its mission.

Tsai, a longtime supporter of the ALRP, is being recognized for his dedication to the organization. In addition to his past board service, personal contributions, work on pro bono immigration matters and other volunteer time, Tsai helped secure some of the largest cy pres awards in the ALRP’s history. Cy pres awards are residual funds remaining after a class action settlement that are distributed to charitable organizations.

ALRP handles thousands of cases each year, providing free and low-cost legal assistance to persons living with HIV/AIDS in the San Francisco Bay Area. Legal issues the organization handles include housing, bankruptcy/credit, immigration, employment, insurance, confidentiality matters, family law, government benefits and public accommodations.

Tsai is an active member of his local community, serving as the President-Elect of the Asian American Bar Association and on the boards of Lambda Legal, Bar Association of San Francisco (BASF), Equality California, and the University of California, Riverside. He has been recognized as a top 50 California Lawyer on the Fast Track by The Recorder and was named a Rising Star by the Minority Corporate Counsel Association.

An intellectual property partner in V&E’s San Francisco office, Tsai’s practice focuses on patent, trade secret, complex breach of contract and product defect litigation for companies innovating biotechnology, medical devices, software and hardware.
