London Fire: Grenfell Tower Project
The Grenfell Tower
fire occurred on June 14, 2017 at the 24-story Grenfell Tower block of public
housing flats in North Kensington, London. The fire was reported to have
started by a fridge-freezer on the fourth floor and spread rapidly through the
whole building. Approximately 80
people died in the fire.
Over the several
weeks that V&E helped on the Grenfell Tower project, assistance that still
continues, approximately 15-20 of our lawyers dedicated their time assisting at
the North Kensington Law Centre, based very close to the site of the fire.
These lawyers carried out a variety of tasks, the first of which was to raise
awareness of the Law Centre itself so that victims could go to a central place
for all their needs and feel safe. Other tasks included speaking to the victims
and their families, helping them obtain funds from the government immediately
after the fire, assisting with rehousing issues, and ensuring that those people
affected had a way to replace important documentation such as passports and
birth certificates amongst other items.
