Environmental Initiatives — Recent Developments
Presented: 8th Annual Gas & Power Institute, September 10 – 11, 2009, Houston, Texas

by Christopher B. Amandes

Energy and the environment have always been inextricably linked, but the issue of climate change has highlighted that linkage as never before. It is difficult to imagine how a discussion about the United States’ or the planet’s energy future can go forward without a discussion of the environment and vice versa. This paper describes the most recent developments in environmental regulation of the natural gas and power generation sectors. It is increasingly difficult to separate “environmental” issues from “energy” issues, but this paper focuses primarily on the environmental issues that affect emissions from the combustion of natural gas and other hydrocarbons, and also addresses carbon capture and sequestration, renewable portfolio standards, and similar issues. Read the entire article here; view a presentation that accompanied this paper here.
