Islamic Finance and Investment
Overview The Islamic finance industry has grown at a significant pace over the years, and as this quickly evolving sector continues to cement its place on the global stage, Vinson & Elkins is there helping clients identify and structure smart solutions and expand into new frontiers. As an industry leader, V&E has advised on complex Islamic finance and investment transactions in more than 25 jurisdictions. Our firm has established experience not only in Islamic jurisdictions, but also on the structuring and documentation of capital markets, private equity, and asset management transactions and products in non-Islamic jurisdictions (including the United States, European Union, and Southeast Asia). For example, we advised on the first-ever Shari'a-compliant gas-backed securitization, and the first Islamic securitization which was originated in the U.S. and rated by Standard & Poors, and on structured products and funds investing in global real estate and private equity investments.
Our work on behalf of our clients has received high accolades from major publications for our involvement in innovative transactions, including “Most Innovative Islamic Finance Deal of the Year” by Euromoney (2006) and “Best Structured Finance Deal of the Year” (2006) and “Best Structure by a Private Corporate Issuer,” (2006) by International Financial Law Review. We also maintain excellent working relationships with prominent Shari'a advisers all over the globe.
Our lawyers stay at the forefront of legislative developments and have the commercial knowledge and experience to help clients in jurisdictions around the world find alternatives to conventional financing arrangements and access to the growing range of Shari’a-compliant products. From financial institutions, investment banks, sovereign wealth funds, and private equity firms, V&E handles the most complex Islamic finance transactions for our clients.
