Biography
Knox has a broad-based litigation practice. He has significant experience in catastrophic tort cases, mass torts, class actions, products liability, and business disputes. He has been a practicing trial lawyer since 1968 and has started more than 150 jury trials and has taken more than 100 cases to a verdict. He also has handled a variety of other major litigation matters involving legal malpractice, breach of contract, employment law, intellectual property, technology, and real estate.
Knox, a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, has been certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in Personal Injury Trial Law since 1978 and Civil Trial Law since 1979. On June 19, 2000, Knox was named by the Texas Lawyer as one of the 100 Legal Legends who helped shape law and lawyering in Texas in the 20th century. On June 13, 2003, Knox received the prestigious Ronald D. Secrest Outstanding Trial Lawyer Award from the Texas Bar Foundation. The award honors a trial lawyer who, by his or her practice, has demonstrated outstanding trial and advocacy skills, high ethical and moral standards and exceptional professional conduct, thus enhancing the image of trial lawyers. Knox was inducted into the 52nd Longhorn Hall of Honor class on November 7, 2008 in honor of individuals who possessed outstanding ability in a sport as well as sportsmanship, character and integrity; and shall be one who has brought great distinction to The University of Texas.

Appellate
- Won the three cases argued to the Texas Supreme Court
Class Actions/Mass Torts View All
- Lead trial counsel defending one of the nation’s largest railroads in multiple putative class actions and individual toxic tort actions arising out of Kentucky train derailment
- Lead trial counsel for pharmaceutical manufacturer Purdue Pharma L.P. in its Texas Oxycontin litigation
- Lead Texas liaison counsel and lead trial counsel for Bridgestone/Firestone, Inc. in its statewide coordination under Rule 11 and Rule 13 of the Texas Rules of Judicial Administration in Firestone Tire/Ford Rollover litigation

- Successfully defended Marine Officer as lead civilian trial counsel in 17-day Court of Inquiry trial at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina in January 2008, during the first Court of Inquiry conducted by the Marine Corps in fifty years arising out of allegations of excessive and indiscriminate force allegedly used by Special Operations Marines under his command in defending against a complex ambush in Afghanistan
- Led Firestone defense team in first Firestone tire/Ford Explorer rollover case tried in federal court in Texas for two weeks in August of 2001; $1 billion suit was settled on third day of jury deliberations
- Jointly led successful defense of Colonial Pipeline Company in a 12-week toxic tort trial in Jefferson County (Beaumont) that resulted in take-nothing jury verdict for trial group; the incident involved the largest inland gasoline spill ever in the U.S.; this defense verdict was reported by the National Law Journal as being among the fifteen most outstanding U.S. defense verdicts for 1997
Arbitration
- Represented major American construction company in AAA International Arbitration with Japanese Company arising out of construction project in South America
- Represented a large Houston-based energy company in a dispute with its former CEO over his severance pay; a three-member arbitration panel concluded that the executive was not entitled to any payments other than those set forth in his employment agreement, and sided with the company regarding its interpretation of all disputed items in that written contract
NCAA
- Successfully represented major university athletic department in its NCAA investigations
Intellectual Property
- Represented major corporation in dispute over ownership of intellectual property involving medical technology; case resolved very successfully with substantial settlement recovered by the client for economic damages suffered
Malpractice
- Successfully handled and resolved serious and sensitive legal malpractice claim brought against a major law firm client
- Argued and won motion for summary judgment for major law firm client against multiple tort claims; take nothing judgment affirmed by Texas Supreme Court
