Recruitment at V&E
We believe that a career with Vinson & Elkins in London represents an outstanding opportunity to fulfill your professional ambitions.
Over 30 years ago Vinson & Elkins was one of the first U.S. firms to establish an office in London, and the continuing development of our London office is a vital part of V&E's international strategy. Our long experience in London and our Texas roots give us a unique perspective and a rich and friendly culture, which those who have joined us find refreshingly different.
Our strategy for growth in London is simple, yet effective: to build steadily on our strengths in M&A, energy, project finance, finance, securities, and international dispute resolution, and to focus on the long term. We believe that by hiring the best lawyers and giving them every opportunity to develop their practice in a supportive environment, they will flourish and so will our firm.
Trainees
We currently offer between 3 and 5 training contracts commencing each September. These are not run on a rigid seat system, but instead a trainee will gain wide experience in many different areas, working with a wide variety of associates and partners from across the firm.
Whilst the trainees are based in London, we are currently rolling out a formal secondment programme to other offices (particularly our offices in Dubai and Moscow. In addition to the Training Principal (currently Mark Beeley), trainees will have the support of an associate mentor (appointed for the full 2 year training contract for continuity) to provide an extra, and often first, port of call for support and assistance.
Vinson & Elkins look to recruit from the best candidates and we believe our training contracts reflect that — both in quality of training and work as well as in the highly competitive salary (not to mention benefits) we offer (£40,000 for first year trainees and £42,000 for second year trainees, with a newly qualified salary of £80,000). We also pay all course fees and a discretionary stipend (of up to £7,500) to assist with the LPC year.
Chambers and Partners recently profiled the quality of V&E's London trainee programme, observing: "Offering all the resources, cash and charm of a US firm, there is much to tempt prospective trainees to the V&E way." Read our full review here.
Training Contracts Commencing 2009
Our recruitment season for training contracts commencing 2009 has now closed.
Training Contracts Commencing 2010
If you are interested in applying for a training contract commencing in 2010 then you should strongly consider applying for a vacation placement with us for the summer of 2008. We view vacation placements as an invaluable tool for allowing both you and us to assess each other, and accordingly, when considering training contract applications we give first preference to those who have completed a placement with us. During the course of the one or two weeks you spend in our London office you will get full exposure to the different areas of practice the office offers, and will as much as possible be treated as though you were a first seat trainee, in order to give you a real insight as to what life in V&E would be like.
Applications for placements should be made by way of application form before the end of February 2008. Please note that places are limited and that from the end of January will be assessed on a 'first come, first served basis.'
Applications for training contracts should also be made by way of application form and should be submitted before 31 August 2008. We aim to make awards of training contracts for 2010 by 30 September 2008. Please note that while we do give first preference to our vacation placements students, we do also accept applications from those who have not undergone a placement.
