During the summer of 2008, Vinson & Elkins awarded 31 scholarships to first-year students at The University of Texas School of Law through a partnership with Law Preview, a nationally recognized specialist in law school preparatory courses. Students from racial/ethnic groups historically underrepresented in the legal profession (i.e., Asian/ Pacific Islander, Black/African American, Latino/Hispanic, and/or Native American) enrolled at The University of Texas School of Law beginning in fall 2008 were eligible to apply.
In early June, the selection committee notified scholarship recipients. Roughly one-third of UT's incoming class of students of color received this scholarship. The V&E Law Preview Scholarships program was spearheaded by the firm's Diversity Committee, whose mission extends beyond recruiting and retaining attorneys from varying backgrounds and perspectives to investing in a diverse pipeline of emerging talent.
Recognizing the importance of early preparation and the existence of invisible barriers to success often faced by students of color, V&E formed a unique partnership — the first of its kind — with Law Preview. Founded in 1997, Law Preview specializes in intensive, one-week preparatory courses. Classes are taught by law school professors and are held in 13 cities across the nation. Vinson & Elkins underwrote the cost for each student to attend a Law Preview prep course, and the positive response from scholarship recipients has been overwhelming. "Without this scholarship, I do not imagine that I could have been as prepared for my first year of law school as I believe that I am now," commented scholarship recipient Joseph Hinojosa. Another scholarship recipient, Emery Choi, commented, "It is both comforting and flattering to know that even before my law career has begun, there are people interested in my development as a lawyer."
