Scott Stiegler Senior Associate, Construction & Engineering, International Dispute Resolution & Arbitration

Scott’s principal area of practice is major construction and infrastructure, and his most recent experience includes advising the Panama Canal Authority in relation to various disputes arising out of the $5.25 billion Panama Canal Expansion Program.

Prior to joining Vinson & Elkins, Scott acted in a number of high-profile construction litigation cases in Australia, appearing before the Queensland and New South Wales Supreme Courts. He also has significant experience providing strategic and commercially focused advice to clients on the drafting and negotiation of various standard form and bespoke contracts.

Scott is qualified and admitted to practice in Australia where he worked for more than four years in a real estate, construction and infrastructure disputes practice group of a top-tier international law firm.

Prior to joining the firm, Scott worked for an international consulting engineering firm and spent several years practicing as in-house solicitor, where he oversaw all legal matters within his jurisdiction.

He has practiced across a range of disciplines, including mining, oil and gas, environment, building engineering, major infrastructure, water and transportation. Scott has also recently been recognised in Legal500 UK as a “rising star.” The following is a list of representative matters in which Scott has assisted.

Experience Highlights

  • Advising the Panama Canal Authority in relation to the construction and engineering aspects of the $5.25 billion Panama Canal Expansion Program and a number of technical and high-value disputes in DAB proceedings and ICC arbitration proceedings
  • Represented an international structural façade consultant in ongoing payment and variation disputes in connection with the design and construction of a façade for a research facility in Saudi Arabia
  • Representing an international EPC contractor and specialist waste-to-energy plant provider in major disputes concerning the design of a waste-to-energy plant in the UK
  • Advising an owner in relation to ongoing disputes with a consortium of major contractors regarding warranty claims for a desalination plant in Saudi Arabia
  • Preparation of a modified FIDIC-based EPC contract for the development of an ammonia processing plant in Louisiana, United States of America
  • Assisting with the preparation of a standard suite of international contracts for a major Chinese petroleum and petrochemical company
