Vinson & Elkins’ LNG experience is a natural outgrowth of our long relationship with the natural gas industry and covers all facets of the LNG business. Our lawyers have extensive institutional knowledge of LNG structuring practices drawn from experience on LNG projects around the world.

In one way or another, V&E has been involved with virtually every LNG export and import project in the United States, and several in Canada. Our regulatory team has developed strong relations with all U.S. Federal agencies involved in LNG regulation and oversight. Proactive and commercially minded, our lawyers have a detailed understanding of what is “market” with regard to the development and financing of LNG facilities, including terms and conditions of tolling services, LNG sales agreements, feedstock gas sales, and gas transportation services.

Experience Highlights

  • An energy trading company in relation to the proposed medium term supply of LNG to the Natural Gas Public Company of the Republic of Cyprus utilizing a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU)

  • Woodside Energy Group Ltd in its $3.35 billion acquisition of Apache Corporation’s interests in the Wheatstone LNG and Balnaves oil development projects in Australia and the Kitimat LNG project in Canada

  • GasAtacama in negotiation of charter agreements for a floating LNG receiving, storage and regasification unit to be moored offshore of Chile, along with related LNG shipping and LNG purchase agreements 

  • BG Group in the development of LNG production and export facilities for the Lake Charles LNG project 

  • Total Gas & Power in negotiation of a long-term LNG import terminalling service agreement pertaining to a greenfield LNG import terminal, as well as a related header pipeline system 

  • The sponsor of a mid-scale LNG export facility on the U.S. Gulf Coast 

  • Santos Limited in the $18.5 billion joint venture with Petronas, TOTAL, and KOGAS, for the development of a two-train greenfield LNG facility in Queensland, Australia, including the negotiation of long-term LNG off-take agreements
