Law360 Names V&E Among 2016 "Energy Groups of the Year"

Published: 01-30-2017

For the seventh consecutive year, Vinson & Elkins has been recognized in Law360’s “Practice Groups of the Year” series for the firm’s industry leading energy transactional and litigation successes in 2016.

V&E is among five law firms honored this year in the energy category, and has been named to the list every year since Law360 launched the series in 2010.

In a Jan. 26 feature article, Law360 describes V&E as an “energy law giant,” lauding the firm for its victory on behalf of Energy Transfer Equity LP (ETE) when the Delaware Court of Chancery allowed the company to terminate a $38 billion merger deal with energy firm The Williams Cos.

"[W]e had all of our best partners in all of these disciplines coming together to work on this case, because it was such a high profile case, and it was such an important case for the client,” said John Wander, head of the firm’s Complex Commercial Litigation practice.

Williams appealed to the Delaware Supreme Court, which heard oral arguments on Jan. 11. V&E is advising ETE on appeal.

On the transactional side, Law360 credits V&E for navigating billion dollar deals and using “global and varied resources to remain a central force in the sector’s IPO space.”

“The market came back for us at the end of the year,” David Oelman, co-head of the firm’s Mergers and Acquisitions and Capital Markets practice group, told Law360. “Where there was IPO activity in the energy world, we were involved.”

The profile highlights V&E’s work as underwriters’ counsel in Noble Midstream Partners’ $280 million IPO and Smart Sands Inc.’s $129 million IPO in the second half of the year, as well as the firm’s representation of natural gas producer Vantage Energy Inc. in its $2.7 billion acquisition by Rice Energy. V&E also guided Vantage as it pursued a potential IPO prior to the execution of the Rice transaction.

“I would tell you we are as busy, if not busier, than we were in 2013, 2014 with respect to IPO projects right now,” Oelman added.

Law360 “Practice Groups of the Year” are selected based on the significance, size, complexity and quantity of significant representations completed successfully over the last year. More than 600 submissions were received for the overall series, which recognized firms in a variety of practice areas.
