V&E Participates in 2017 SEC Government-Business Forum on Small Business Capital Formation

Top SEC officials gathered on November 30th for the 2017 Government-Business Forum on Small Business Capital Formation. The annual Forum, which is typically held in Washington D.C., took place in Austin this year in partnership with the Herb Kelleher Center for Entrepreneurship, Growth and Renewal at the McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas at Austin. SEC Chairman Jay Clayton, SEC Commissioners Kara Stein and Michael Piwowar and SEC Division of Corporation Finance Director William H. Hinman all attended and gave opening remarks regarding the need to support the growth efforts of small businesses.

After the introductory speeches, a panel that included V&E Partner Paul Tobias discussed the experiences of emerging growth companies and opportunities for improvement in the SEC’s regulations for small businesses raising capital.

Attendees then split into two breakout groups to draft suggestions for the SEC regarding exempt securities offerings and smaller registered and Regulation A securities offerings. A final report for the 2017 Forum that includes the attendees’ recommendations for the SEC and transcripts of the Commissioners’ remarks can be found on the SEC website, along with final reports from previous years’ Forums.
